Gary Long was born in Birmingham and studied at Birmingham College of Art and Manchester College of Art, where he was awarded a fellowship, the equivalent of an M.A. by research

He worked in Vancouver and Toronto as an illustrator for two years before returning to England.The following thirty years were spent freelancing for national and international clients as varied as book jackets for Judy Bloom, Film posters for Warner Bros., illustrations B.B.C., Pan Books, Mobil Oil, Esso and many more.

Gary is an artist member of the Society of Illustrators in New York and has built up a following over recent years as a painter.
